The product

Free play comes first, and it is deliberately frictionless: no sign-up, no download, a real opponent and a real rating from the first game. Most platforms put a registration form in front of that, and lose most people there.

From there, a player who wants the game to matter can put something on it. Matches start at €0.50, which is low enough to be a decision about the game rather than a decision about money. Alongside one-off matches there are tournaments and direct challenges against a specific opponent.

Under the hood

The server is the sole authority on game state. Legality, clocks, results and payouts are decided server-side and pushed over WebSockets; the client renders what it is told. In a game people are staking money on, a client that can assert anything about the position is not an option.

Matchmaking, presence and short-lived locks run through Redis, and the real-time layer carries the full match lifecycle — queueing, moves, clocks, resignations, challenge accept and decline.

Handling money properly

A balance is never stored as a number. Every movement is a transaction in a ledger, and the balance is derived from it. That is what makes disputes resolvable, payment-processor reconciliation possible, and an audit something you can actually perform rather than assert.

The economics are configuration rather than code: how a top-up splits between credited balance, VAT and platform revenue, and how a match splits between stake, rake and winner payout — with different rule sets by country and by game mode, because VAT treatment is not the same everywhere.

Withdrawals are the other half of trust. Bank details are verified, payouts are reviewable by an administrator, and the whole path from stake to bank account is reconstructable from the ledger.
